Who Is Maria Pepe and Why This Series Exists

Maria Pepe was born in 1960 in Hoboken, New Jersey. She loved baseball from the time she was young and played every day after school with her neighborhood friends. In 1972, at age 12, she tried out for the Young Democrats in Hoboken and made the team as a pitcher.

How Maria Pepe changed Little League timeline showing key milestones from 1972 through the 2026 Maria Pepe Legacy Series

1972

Maria Pepe pitches three games for the Young Democrats in Hoboken, NJ. Little League Baseball threatens to revoke the team’s charter if she stays on the roster. Her coach asks for her jersey back. She gets to keep her cap.

1973

New Jersey judge Sylvia Pressler rules in Pepe’s favor, writing that there is no reason Little League should be withheld from girls. The National Organization for Women supported her case throughout the process.

1974

The New Jersey Superior Court upholds the ruling. Little League Baseball removes the gender clause from its Federal Charter. Girls can now play Little League. Over 30,000 girls signed up for the following season.

2024

Little League International enshrined Pepe into the Little League Hall of Excellence during the first-ever Legacy Series weekend. She is the eighth woman to receive the honor. The series is named in her honor.

By the time the ruling came through, Pepe had already aged out of Little League. She never got to play again. But over five million girls have played Little League since her court case cleared the way. Twenty-four girls have competed in the Little League Baseball World Series, including at least one in each of the last six events. You can read more in the complete LLWS history guide.

How the Weekend Started

Players checked in at registration as soon as they arrived in Williamsport. Every participant received an official gear package put together with the support of Little League’s national sponsors. From the first moment, the focus was entirely on giving these players a full LLWS experience.

LLWS Player Housing

All players, coaches, and umpires stayed in Dr. Creighton J. Hale International Grove for the full weekend. That is the same housing facility used by LLBWS participants every August. It is one of the most unique parts of the Legacy Series experience for the girls who attend.

MLB Pitch, Hit & Run: A Historic Moment

Before the weekend’s games began, every participant competed in the MLB Pitch, Hit, and Run event at Volunteer Stadium. It was the first time in the event’s 50-year history that an all-girls baseball competition had taken place as part of MLB Play Ball Weekend.

The event tested each player in three separate skills: pitching accuracy toward a stationary target, hitting off a tee into the field of play, and running speed. Every player competed. The atmosphere set the tone for the rest of the weekend.

Ariana Rodriguez’s overall score of 1,070 points earned her a spot in the MLB Team Championship. Those larger events take place at MLB stadiums across the country. Team Championship winners can advance to the Finals at the MLB World Series with an all-expense paid trip for the athlete and one guardian.

Meeting Maria Pepe in Person

On Friday evening, after their first dinner together in the Grove, all the players gathered for a conversation with Maria Pepe herself. She shared her personal Little League story with the group, starting from her childhood in Hoboken and the three games she pitched before being forced off the team.

Pepe was enshrined into the Little League Hall of Excellence in 2024, the highest honor the organization can give. She is the eighth woman to receive the distinction. Her cap from 1972, the one item she kept when she had to return her jersey, now sits on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

Team Names and Game Action

Each team played three games across Howard J. Lamade Stadium and Volunteer Stadium during the weekend. Before the games began, each team chose its own name on Friday evening rather than simply going by its jersey color. The results showed exactly the kind of personalities these girls brought to Williamsport.

On Sunday morning, all players, coaches, and umpires gathered on the field at Howard J. Lamade Stadium for a group photo. Maria Pepe joined them in the field. The image brought together the woman who fought for their right to play and the next generation who benefits from it.

Sponsors Who Made It Possible

Official Sponsor Support: The 2026 Legacy Series ran on the support of Little League’s official sponsors. adidas supplied uniforms and cleats. DICK’S Sporting Goods provided sinch bags. Gatorade stocked squeeze bottles. New Era Cap provided official headgear. Easton supplied team equipment. Without sponsor support, the gear, housing, and facilities that made this weekend possible would not exist.

The event connects directly to the broader LLWS sponsor network. The same brands that outfit teams at the 2026 Little League Baseball World Series in August also backed this all-girls weekend in June. See the full LLWS 2026 sponsors guide for the complete list.
